I knew a WWII vet back in the mid 90s. He served over in the Pacific in active combat. He was a really nice guy, but he still had a strong hate for anyone Asian from his time in the war. He admitted they were taught to hate the Japanese and like this video shows, it was kill or be killed

When he left the U.S, probably for basic training in spring of 1942, it was a much different world than the one he returned to in late 1945-46. The Americans won Europe in spring 45, and from what I understand, there wasn’t a big uproar for pacific theatre vets returning like there was for ETO vets, though many were the first to volunteer after Pearl Harbor. Many Pacific vets got home much later than ETO vets.
When he left in 42, America was just coming out of the depression. He came back to a fast moving, highly prosperous country. The technological advancements were enormous in just those 2-5 years as well.
