Grew up in WV. Moved to Detroit for work after grad school. The fact that Canada was south of Detroit made for some good jokes in the winter - "I'm sick of this cold weather, we need to move south...maybe Canada!" :D

Windsor made or break numerous bands back in the day due to having the most powerful radio station in north america that could reach all the way to texas. I grew up outside Detroit, then I joined the Army and got stationed in Alaska, Canada has always been south to me. Now we are moving to Victoria in Canada... and where we will be south of the US San Juan Islands.

Many people also don't realize how crazily far north Europe is. For example :
- Rome is further north than New York.
- Lyon (southeast France) is further north than MontrƩal.
- Stockholm and Oslo are further north than Anchorage
- And probably the most mindblowing to me : ALL of Europe (including Malta, Crete and Cyprus) is further north than Tokyo

When you truly understand geography you would be fascinated by the weird quirks on Earth.. Most people would assume that Canada as some distant arctic county full of snow but in reality most European cities are further North. Toronto the largest city is just slightly north of Rome for example..
