Here's how to start using sign language with your baby ⬇️

Hey, I'm Laura I share about sign language and how it can be a game changer for your baby / toddler's early communication skills.

1️⃣To get the most bang for your buck, use signs for highly functional words. These words meet your child's communication needs across multiple contexts and settings. This way, one sign can be used many times to help in many different contexts.

For example: MORE
MORE tickles, MORE bubbles, MORE water, MORE strawberries, MORE swinging, MORE dancing

2️⃣When signing with your hearing baby or toddler, pair the sign with the spoken word. While American Sign Language is not paired with speech (it doesn't follow English word order), you are using ASL signs to bridge the gap in communication with your baby's spoken language development. You want the spoken+signed words to happen at the same time, so your baby learns both!

3️⃣Rather than signing in only limited settings, like only at meal time, integrate sign language across your child's entire day. That way, your baby knows that sign language can be used at all times, helping them communicate their needs with you more!
