The P-38, B-17, and B-24 had similar turbo-superchargers. Apparently the USAAF had a thing for these types of devices for their high altitude aircraft. By contrast, the USN opted for a "simpler" mechanically driven supercharger for their F6F, and F4U with the same R2800 engine. They both had 2 stage, intercooled superchargers with 2 speeds (or 3 speeds, I am not sure). Although not as smooth performing as the turbo-supercharger units, they were less complex, smaller, and weighed less. Things essential for an aircraft operating off an Aircraft Carrier.

Guys, forced induction of all types is supercharging. Supercharging with an exhaust driven turbine is turbo-supercharging. Over the last 100 years we’ve cleaned up the nomenclature a bit and left out some syllables to refer to an exhaust driven system simply as a turbocharger. However, calling it a turbo-supercharger is still technically more correct than just turbocharger. We can all be right in this discussion and the OP and the engineers at repulic aircraft do know what they’re talking about calling it supercharging.

For those wondering why he called it a supercharger, in aviation a turbo is considered a form of a supercharger, turbosuperchargers, turbo meaning turbine driven, super meaning above normal, and charger referring to the charge air pressure. Turbine driven above normal charge air pressure. This is in contrast to turbonormalizing which is where a turbo is used to keep the manifold pressure at standard sea level pressure while at cruising altitude, to prevent power loss from the thinner atmosphere. Gear driven superchargers are also just called superchargers as they were the norm before turbosuperchargers!
