In addition to the convoy, USS Midway was in standby offshore and nuclear-capable bombers were circling over Joint Security Area. 12,000 extra troops were ordered to South Korea. Several units near the JSA were ordered to standby in case more firepower was needed, including infantry, armor and anti-air regiments. It wasn't just the 813 men on the convoy sent to cut the tree, it was a massive show of force.
