Great blue herons eat small fish, swallowing them head first. They are one of the top predators in the Bay's food chain, “dining” on frogs, salamanders, snakes, lizards, shellfish, small birds, rodents, grasshoppers, and other insects such as dragonflies.
A heron might chase a cormorant because they both compete for the same food source (fish), and the heron sees the cormorant as a competitor, particularly if the cormorant is actively hunting in an area where the heron wants to feed, essentially trying to "scare" the cormorant away from its potential prey.
