this is improperly executed urbanism and i don't blame you for not liking this. proper urbanism would have mixed-use development, closer together. there would be closer train/bus/subway stations than a ten minute drive and there would be more than just an overpriced grocery store near you. i wouldn't say that where you live is even urban in the first place. in a properly walkable city you wouldn't need a car, but you would clearly need a car where you live.
it seems like where you're currently staying has a worst of both worlds going on, with the noise and lack of space of an urban center, and the long commutes and car-dependence of the suburbs. i understand you being upset, but know that this is not what is meant by walkable development.
i would strongly recommend the book Walkable City by Jeff Speck. literally the best book i've ever read and it will fundamentally change how you view the world around you. the strange suburb-urban hybrid you're living in isn't the answer, but the suburbs certainly aren't the answer either and the book thoroughly illustrates why. i hope one day you're given the opportunity to live in a properly walkable, well-planned city center.
