so the guy and his family were hiding in a forest because their village was attacked.
they were starving.
out of desperation he killed the bird woman and he and his family ate her. but because some sort of magic or curse his entire family died, but he lived.

It's sucks because the monsters in the world see humans as the highest quality of product that can be used for many means including food. His family was starving and on deaths door he was desperate for food. The flesh of those burd people are lethal to humans. It wasn't about what he did was morally wrong it was simply a misfortune
