Another thing they love to gloss over: according to Herodotus, the pyramids were 600 years old in his time, dating them to 1000BC.
Yet even though the ancients got the dating of 2000 year old monuments wrong by 1400 years, we're supposed that they could date 9000 year old events with perfect accuracy.

From I understand, Atlantis was a fictional city created by Plato to explain his work in The Republic. This is the reason why the location can never be pinpointed.

Excellent. And there is a direct conclusion. That even Modern Man cannot describe more than sketchily what happened 9,000 years before even if the kingdom of Atlantis existed. And yet Plato recounted a tale almost like JRR Tolkien about a land long ago and far away with names, actions, and locations specified. So Plato was making up a morality tale to prove one of his philosophical points. He didn't claim actual history according to Aristotle, his pupil. This tale by a smart Greek about what happened 9,000 years before with startling accuracy don't forget was at a time when the best science referred to mastodon skulls as cyclops skulls.

Further people somehow roped the Egyptians into the tale to give more cachet, more intellectual heft and sophistication to the Atlantis theory but the Egyptians' knowledge of what happened about Atlantis had to be as bad as anyone else's. But beyond simply changing stories with each generation, not even a written account of the events and a subsequent continuous historical written record would guarantee survivability of anything approaching the probable detailed accuracy of a recalled event that Plato related. Even the Bible itself, the Book of Books, has not remained pure and unchanging in a much shorter length of time.

So does anyone think that the various fairy tales about Cinderella, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, and so many others aren't merely morality tales told to guide modern behavior, but were actually historical records? Did it occur to anyone that Plato wrote the story of Atlantis to make a point about morality?

Oh stop being so reasonable, logical and factual....... it ruins the conspiracy theories.

For anyone arguing this point. This is only one of many holes in the story.

It’s because Plato made it all up. There is no Atlantis.
It’s a description of a utopia , that Plato hoped would inspire the citizens, to live better lives.

Doesn't change that fact that the date given does correspond with the Younger Dryas event. It is not unreasonable to expect an earth changing event like that that to be recorded through legend and eventually written down. If Plato was guessing, then I'll happily let him pick my lottery numbers because that man has a gift. Atlantis may be a myth, but the Younger Dryas is not, and Plato nailed it, whether you believe it or not.

Dude, the aliens came back and told Plato. Duh.

That’s cool and all but are we also forgetting that Atlantis was created in a day by THE GOD OF THE SEA? Sounds Iike more than a small detail they overlook.

Also there wasn't a "Younger Dryas catastrophe." The change that happened during that time unfolded slowly over more than a thousand years.

Of Course he did, just like George Lucas knew when the Empire took over from the Republic.

Subscribed. It's too hard to find academically minded discussion of ancient history on here,

That's what I always wondered. Without writing, how did they transmit the knowledge of Atlantis over all those thousands of years.

@alicia1463

IIRC, Atlantis tried to conquer the city of Athens in the story, thousands of years before Athens existed.

Also, there was only one person every generation who would repeat the facts about Atlantis, guaranteeing the information would not spread too far. And once Plato mentioned it, no one bothered ever again.

He didn’t know exactly…. That’s the point… 9000 years is very vague and obviously leaves room of error to be +/- hundreds of years. What I find interesting is that everyone can accept that anatomically modern humans have been around over 200,000 years but that we just got language and writing 5,000 years ago? And why did we start building megalithic structures in the first place? Or is it possible that the violent end to the younger dryus actually destroyed humanity and we are now seeing a revival of our species and that Solon and the ancient Egyptians merely wrote down a long passed story of the demise of humans when we were at our peak.?

If you want to debunk something, you shouldn't lie. Plato never says "exactly", he says "more than 9000 years ago". And as the story goes, the dates come from statues of high priests, so in some form of maybe not writing, but number-recording system. The whole idea of civilizations 11 000 years ago was laughable until recently when dating of Gobekli Tepe was confirmed and we now know people back then were capable of large building projects.
