The Vinča Culture was an archaeological culture of Southeast Europe dating to c. 5400–4500 BC. They were one of the first societies to develop metallurgy and perhaps even writing. They also made incredible ceramic figurines of people with strange rectangular heads and bulging eyes. What were they?

If you talk to a potter about the pots these people made, the actual functional pots, they are incredibly technically accomplished.

They’re very reminiscent of “Dogū” figurines. (I got to hold one last month 10000 years old!!) 🤓👍💚

I could totally see, in the case of our thick friend there, a caricature being made for fun. “That one? Oh that’s Karen down the corner, she’s not one to gossip but you ain’t heard that from me. “

In all seriousness though, stylistically she doesn’t seem to fit in with the other more angular figures?

Masks? I recall the early Chinese pottery producers were discovered to wear masks. . Note these are SEATED which would indicate non aggression?

I have noticed that several of them have holes in their arms and heads. What are those for? Where the figurines hung up somewhere? Were they attached to clothing?

Fascinating that they are wearing masks! It reminds me of all the ancient shamanic traditions where the shamans put on masks and costumes to embody a spirit or deity. I imagine that making a figurine of the shaman in full costume would be a figurine that depicts this particular spirit or deity.

But of course that's just me guessing. Maybe the masks just show that playing dress up is one of the most ancient things people do for fun and entertainment. Who knows 😊

Erich von Däniken would say these figures were accurate representations of aliens who brought civilisation to these lands... 😂

Look like children's toys if not too heavy.

The apparent masks represent something akin to wearing a cap and gown awarded to a person represented by the figurines in a coming-of-age ceremony or a declaration of status earned by competing in a rigorous testing regime. It would be like hanging your degree on the wall. They may represent an ancestor whose line was awarded noble status due to a deed beneficial to society.

Masks!! That’s very interesting, looking at the video again you can see many of them have holes at either side of the face, this would be clearly depicting a mask?
But looking closer I notice many have larger holes around the shoulder area I’m curious if these holes go all the way through the figure

if you look at the very first figurine I’m wondering if the round openings on the inside of the arms are eye width apart?

It’s hard to judge the size of that piece but if that’s a mask of a figure wearing a mask that would be interesting!
