Another trick... Turn the volume down super quiet to when adjusting the attack. Surprisingly easy to tell what the compressor is doing to the transient this way

The human ear is excellent at detecting a change in sound.
To take advantage of this I loop a single snare hit with a really tight/quick loop range. Then reduce the compressors threshold to get heaps of gain reduction and set the release to as fast as it can. Now if you play around with the attack you can hear even the slightest difference in transient change.

This applies to basically all effects. I do it with reverb, echo, distortion as well. Love it!

Yess! Mixing is all about perspective and this is a good systematic way of hearing what you're doing BEFORE you turn the threshold down to taste.

ESSENTIAL. This changed my mix game completely, once i noticed this. And this translates to anything in the mix with a knob. The only true way to know what you're really doing.

Few years ago I had an NJ Deluxe and WMD Warbeast and they were so nice. Funny enough the regular Warlock shape is very comfy

Make up gain with a high threshold ( at least -22db) is where compression truly shines. Also use slow attack + slow release to accentuate ambient sounds, and fast attack + fast release to crush transients for ear piercing cymbals, hi-hats etc...

Always easier to hear analog compression vs digital. You really learn how to use compression with analog imo
