This would be great as a more in-depth video with examples of different types of headphone mixes (maybe a few examples). I mostly record myself because when Iā€™m in someone elseā€™s studio, the headphone mix is a struggle and expends so much energy before I start that the defeated vibes creep in. I think sooo many people would benefit from a in-depth look at this from the perspective of a few different singers/genres and types of songs (loud/busy and soft/sparse etc). Setting up cue mixes and also discussing the use of compression for the sake of bringing the vocals forward and for the singers perspective etc. Soooo needed! There are so few videos out there discussing this with any kind of detail. Thanks for your videos, Iā€™ve enjoyed them for years! ā¤šŸ˜Š

For performance this is essential and whatever you can do to help the performance.
I remember when DSP wasnā€™t a thing and longing just to have eq, compression and reverb without latency on a budgetā€¦ then you get that and performances improvedā€¦ then you get really lush sounding analog and suddenly then improved againā€¦ what I do now as a extra add on to helping performance is I use a wireless mic transmitter that allows like level transfer and then have the output be from the interface to two receivers in the the artists pockets that then go into a portable headphone amp and then connect that to a really nice sounding close-back headphones and then the artists doesnā€™t feel strapped to the mic areaā€¦ they can move around freely and find this really helps to shut off from the restraints of moving around in between takes and allows them to transition back to the production area easily and just makes it that much more effortless.

As someone who has been screaming in studios for awhile now... This is 100% true.
For me, personally - I want to hear as much of the total amount of instruments as possible (so I am able to feel the energy and vibe of the song), and my own vocals a bit louder than they will be in the final mix. (I want to be able to hear any mistakes, so I can correct myself.. But in context... Because not everything that might feel like a mistake in the moment turns out to be one.)

I've had moments (also on stage w/ monitors) where the sound dudes assume I will want much ME and guitars.. And a bit of drums.. And no bass. (For some reason, a lot of singers ask for that šŸ˜¶)
. But I need the drums for my timing (not only kick snare hihat), guitar for the energy and tone, bass for the fullness of the sound, and - if possible - backing vocals & gang vocals that are already done.
I don't really REQUIRE hearing myself... Because I know what I will sound like, based on how my throat feels, and by the vibrations in my nasal cavity...
Takes a lot of concentration, though.
If I can hear myself properly - (so I can hear how it will sound together with the other instruments) - , I am able to put full focus on getting the best performance out of myself.

Anyways - it's a learning process still.
But having the whole track available with instruments - (even if they're just decent quality pre-production recordings of the instruments (in correct BPM))... - It helps a LOT, ma

As a singer with decent studioexperience i can assure you thats true. Get some easy platereverb going and some tap delay, of course get the balance right. When i started i felt uncomfortable standing in one Spot without moving my body for a condenser. If you have a singer like that get a SM7B wich can be used handheld because performance goes over everything. Just as an option. Good luck.

With my singers I give them the most bare bones mix there is, couple of instruments, bass, maybe drums and a click track with no effects at all on them. My thinking is that they can focus exclusively on the performance without distracted. I'm now questioning this idea (not a bad thing) - anyone got any thoughts?
