This is what happens when you have to put a 3D object on a 2D surface. Things have to get distorted. So if you’re trying to accurately measure distance between countries, you may have to distort their size

It's not a lie. It is a navigational map. Directions measured on the map with a protractor are compass directions to reach your destination.

That's because it's a Mercator map and Mercator maps distort the sizes of things near the poles
