He loved animals!

All his pets had ethnic slurs for names.

When I was a teenager I started reading a lot of Charles Dickens so I researched him. The guy left the mother of his 11 freaking children for a young actress. He also tried to commit his wife to an asylum and keep their kids from seeing her. He was a horrible human being.

My favorite thing ever has got to be when my class was doing debates, and in order to win, my friend goes "okay but how can he be loyal to his country if he can't even be loyal to his wife"

"He was a product of his time."
"What time did he live in?"
"Now"

You left out the part where the girl he left his wife for was 13.

Don't forget the historical men who much of their "contributions" was actually something their wife herself actually discovered, made, or at least collaborated with him on it, but he took all the credit.

That's what I love about Napoleon. Him and Josephine cheated on each other like it was a competition between them.

The ones that are really concerning are when someone’s like “well were things different back then???” and the instructor just goes “haha no, even the people of his time thought he was nuts”

As a generic rather than specific figure, there's also "stole credit for all the work she did, possibly while being rarher mediocre himself."

“He’s just a product of his time” is a disservice to the many good, faithful men who lived in the same time period

‘Great men are often not good men’; I learned much of life from that one statement.

Learning about such historical figures sort of helped me come to terms with my father and grandfather. I had a prof years ago who began the semester with a speech called “Why I hate Ben Franklin” that taught so so many amazing and terrible things about him and that always stuck with me. The fact that two things can be true at the same time is real.

My dad and grandfather- They did great things, they told great stories, they raised awesome children, they were talented and brilliant and funny, both legends in their own right.

And…
They cheated on their wives over and over, they hurt the women who supported them most, they left them to deal with keeping things together so everything would be okay in the end. They drank and drank and drank and passed down functional addiction for generations.

We love them. But they did bad things. We hate them, but They did good things too. None of these facts cancel each other out.

They are all true at the same time.
The world is gray.

May I recommend the HBO miniseries about John Adams, one of the US founding fathers. It's excellent. And he adored his wife, and always sought her advice, and believed in and trusted her as an equal partner in running their farm and household.

We also have letters and diaries from both of them where they pretty much seem madly in love with each other.

Just if you want a historical palette cleanser, it's a good one.

It's always hilarious they'll say he's a product of his time, yet the reason we know about all the bad things they did is because of all the criticism of it at the time.

"Was just a product of his time" I have heard this SO many times.

Edit: All I did was quote the video, and I got 15k likes and a debate in the comments below. WHAT?

Shout out to Princess Diana, who will forever be the Queen of our hearts. After Charles publicly admitted his affair, the media expected her to be ashamed and avoid the public, but instead, she got a divorce and wore an iconic revenge dress.
