The striated grassbird (Megalurus palustris) is an "Old World warbler" species in the family Locustellidae. It was formerly placed in the family Sylviidae. It is now the only species placed in the genus The striated grassbird is generally noisy and conspicuous, often sitting and calling exposed on tops of grasses, bushes and telephone wires. Note streaked crown and streaked upper breast. The genus Megalurus formerly included additional species. It is categorised as "Vulnerable" in the IUCN red list. Its call is almost melodious and pleasant to the human ear. Its song is reminiscent of melancholy songs. It was a common bird in the grasslands of India and was more numerous than sparrows. But now the population has deteriorated due to agricultural intensification, use of pernicious pesticides by greedy farmers and of course, habitat loss. Soon this beautiful bird species will be obliterated unless authorities take proper action in time.
