In 2010, in Otsuchi, Japan, garden designer Itaru Sasaki installed an old phone booth in his garden. His goal? To "call" his late cousin and let his thoughts be “carried on the wind”. This became known as a "wind phone" - a unique way to help people cope with grief and loss. Then, tragedy struck. The 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan, claiming over 15,000 lives. Sasaki opened his wind phone to the public, offering a space for survivors to connect with lost loved ones. Since then, over 30,000 people have visited this special place. The idea has since spread globally. Wind phones now exist in the United States, Canada, and across Europe. They're found in cemeteries, parks, and even along hiking trails. Wind phones provide a space to express feelings, find closure, or simply feel connected to those we've lost - and a poignant example of how old tech can be repurposed to create meaningful connections across generations. And these phones aren't just for those grieving death. They offer a unique way to process all types of loss and unresolved emotions. The classic rotary phone design is intentional. Its familiar, tactile nature can be comforting and calming for users. Throughout history, phones have connected us across distances. Now, they're bridging an even greater gap - between the living and the memories of those we've lost. #shorts #techhistory #mentalhealth #digitalhumanities

Very interesting I wonder if similar “experiments” would yield the same results. Very cool and I hope those people feel a little bit better after speaking their thoughts.

I would have some concern over them being placed in some of those areas. Some looked to be located on hiking trails and such. Usually a random phone box on a hiking trail is going to be some sort of emergency phone. After all, hiking trails are known for not having the best cell coverage.
Obviously it'd be unfortunate if these were confused for one another. And some of these aren't very distinctive to be easily recognized, not to mention their existence not being widespread.

I think they'd ideally be placed in something similar to a shrine, with a bit of privacy and something to help indicate the ceremonial purpose. This might also help people feel more comfortable opening up or conducting ceremonial acts (the use of incense or candles or a place to read favorite books or religious passages, fully outdoors is hard for those things).

A normal looking phone booth in the middle of a hiking trail doesn't quite seem like the best way of going about it. It's definitely a fine idea, just not sure about some of the executions.

This is cool, but you can always accept Jesus and talk to God. He is a living God who cares for all of us and wants a relationship with us. Him dying for our sins is evidence of that. If we are ever distressed we should always ask cry out to God and he will comfort us!
