Spring steel is a great choice. I wouldn't really classify spring steel as mystery. In my thoughts we already know it's capable of hardness because it had a spring temper.

In the 2010s car manufacturers started using inferior steel and there have never been so many cars with broken springs. so if you want to make a knife, keep in mind that the older the car, the better the spring steel, the better the knives.
