This was never truly demonstrated to me when I first took Karate. This shows how complete of a fighting art that Karate actually is and how well it could integrate with Judo or Jiu Jitsu

When you understand the Japanese means pulling hand I think it makes more sense as to its different uses.

How I wish that these simple and true explanations for what we did day in and day out were generally available back in the mid 1970s when I started my karate and taekwondo training. It would have made an immense difference in comprehension and in the training itself.

Awesome 👍
Great to see sombody that knows 👍
Some schools still don't know what hikite is for
It's our responsibility as KARATE students to promote the truth and fullness of the original practice of KARATE ..

Yes, it's a grab and pull. The chamber doesn't have to be a reverse chamber. There's also the vertical chamber. However, you do cover all of the applications. BTW, kudos on good content! Your form is very clean, and you break down technique very well.

Hikite also helps to accelerate the punching hand.

My GF is a boxer and we usually spar. She's always asked why karatekas like us chamber at the hip occasionally when training or sparring sometimes (granted, I chamber there out of instinct before quickly putting my hand up again when I found out my mistake) and I also didn't know

Thank you for finally giving me the answer lol

Can be used to pull but mostly as a counter reaction making the punch harder

It's It's useful excersize to snap the punch back faster and get into habit of twisting your punches but it is never ever a stance you'd take in a fight. It would leave you very exposed. It's good for kata and muscle memory. Not knocking it. But our dojo changed it when the son of the master took over. He said, you'll never see us wasting time doing this and instead had us drill boxing techniques combined with slipping punches, and combined the heavy focus on kicks with it. I won't say who he is but he went on to win in a major promotion and trained with a 4 time champion in 145 in glory, m1. It was originally designed for street defense and was effective but transitioned to training alot of mma (karate (taekwondo kicks, boxing hands and muay thai combos and leg kicks) there was separate muay thai classes but truth is the blk belts who came from the karate, dominated at the other newer classes like muay thai so there is alot to be said for the movement & blocking and counters if karate. Muay thai is good and powerful but my god to they often get caught by the sparring style of the karate guys when they learn leg kick defense and better hands. The kicks coming from the karate guys like myself were so very much more effective due to the hip turn over and snap back and especially flexibility. The question mark kick and the hook kick, spinning back kick almost never failed to land. For example I've seen sensei john spar he would school many of the guys I know except the glory guys. So my point is there must be something to his traditional style of training this punching technique where my dojo dropped it. I believe it creates speed, alternating 1,2 and teaches you to use your hips as well. It creates a stronger punch through muscle use. Clenching at the end as well. Same as kicks held and flexed
