Africa's New Enemy: The Urban Mosquito | Firstpost Africa
Over the years, there have been efforts to tackle Africa's malaria problem. However, all of it could be reversed due to the emergence of a new variant called Anopheles stephensi. This species thrives in urban areas and is also immune to insecticides. So experts are worried about the impact it could have on Africa. Anopheles stephensi is native to parts of South Asia and West Asia but was spotted for the first time in the tiny Horn of Africa state of Djibouti in 2012. Since then Djibouti, which had eradicated malaria has seen a steady increase in malaria. The fears have grown recently, as the mosquito has arrived in neighbouring Ethiopia. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says it is behind an unprecedented surge" in malaria in the East African nation. Watch the video for more details.
