Critical Care Flight Paramedics (68WF2) and Crew Chiefs (15T) of the Michigan Army National Guard transfer a “Rescue Randy” medical dummy from one HH-60M Black Hawk to another in a process known as a tail-to-tail. Tail-to-tails allow aircraft to meet in an agreed upon landing zone and transfer patients, effectively doubling the range of which a patient can be transferred and doubling the time that the forward aircraft can provide coverage to a battlefield.
The HH-60M Black Hawk is the world’s most advanced combat evacuation platform and is used by the US Army’s MEDEVAC units, known by the nickname “Dustoff”. Dustoff crews consist of two Pilots, a Crew Chief, and a Critical Care Flight Paramedic. Crews can also include Flight Surgeons, PAs, Nurses, and other medical professionals.
Pilot, Crew Chief, and Combat Medic (the starting point for a CCFP) positions are open without prior experience. All training for these positions is provided internally by the US Army.
Flight Surgeon, PA, Nurse, and other medical professions including OT and PT are open to individuals holding the relevant degrees and may provide opportunities for direct entrance into the National Guard as an Officer.
