As someone who is looking to get into photography as a fun hobby, how close do you need to actually get to the birds to get shots like this with a 600/800 lens? I'm trying to nail down how much zoom I actually need.

There's a wetlands right by my place that is chock-full of egrets, cranes, and other birds I can't properly photograph because they're all too far away. Canon should have sent that lens to me, 😂

Have you done any bird in flight shots with it , from what I understand that is where it is not too very good .

I got my lens in May and absolutely love it! I paired it with both the R7 and R6 mkii. Works great in low lighting
