Water-filled quarries can be very deep, often 50 ft (15 m) or more, and surprisingly cold, so swimming in quarry lakes is generally not recommended. Unexpectedly cold water can cause a swimmer's muscles to suddenly weaken; it can also cause shock, cold water shock and even hypothermia. Though quarry water is often very clear, submerged quarry stones and abandoned equipment make diving and jumping into these quarries extremely dangerous. Several people drown in quarries each year.Water-filled quarries can have dangerous electric currents in them that can be deadly under water

I swam across that lake. With 6 young guys. In the evening. 2009. Waters cold. Head starts to freeze up in the middle of summer. Because of the wind draft. You litterly can’t stay above water. You have to start swimming underwater. When you come out your head feels unbearable. We kept pushing each other to be able to finish the swim. All of us were strong swimmers. But that was the scariest experience in my life.

The reason why swimming in a quarry is so dangerous is because of the water temperatures and depths. the water is very cold and deep and can cause your body to react unfavorably (muscle cramping) and drowning can occur in under two minutes because of these dangers.

A great friend of mine lost his son at 14 years old to cancer. Mind you his son died over 15 years ago. To this day, his sons room looks exactly the same as it was the day he passed away. he maintains the room and keeps it looking exactly the same. Something about losing a loved one really does something to you. my heart goes out to anyone who ever lost a loved one!

I know someone who jumped off a quarry ledge and landed wrong in the water. She broke her neck,shattered a hip,and broke a couple ribs. She landed feet first. My friend and I had to help get her to top of water and keep her body laying on top of water until rescue emergency copter came. She missed about a half a year of school.

I am 61 now but at age 17 i almost drowned in a quarry. Scared me enough to stay clear of ALL quarries. Sorry for your loss. 🙏

Sorry for your loss. My 16 year old brother drowned in a quarry in 1969. A month later another young man drowned in the same quarry. I hear the water is freezing cold.

This is sad. I swam in quarries all the time as a kid. On certain day, you could see the jagged pieces of metal and entire trees right under the surface. It really is incredibly dangerous to swim in places like that.
It’s been 9 years. I hope she has found a way to move forward and be happy again.

As a Boy Scout in the 1970's in Middle Tennessee, I witnessed an accident in a quarry just like this one. We were warned by Cadre NOT to enter the quarry property, but we thought we were wiser than that.
One guy jumped in, and immediately struck an unseen object in the water with his leg. We hauled him out and took him back to camp, but he required a bunch of stitches and antibiotics to make things right.

Why it is dangerous to swim in quarries:
1.) water temperatures: quarries can be very cold which can quickly lead to hypothermia.
2.) depth: they can be very deep but the depth ranges also change dramatically.
3.) unseen hazards: Quarries can contain abandoned machinery, car wrecks, underwater ledges, and sharp rocks.

Two weeks ago my 15 year old son nearly drowned swimming in 95° temps as he attempted to swim a great distance to a rock. Half way across he couldn't move his body anymore and could barely signal for help. Two people nearby rescued him to safety. An absolute miracle they were able to pull him in to safety. My prayers to this Mom and their family. ❤
