I recall seeing someone bring up that "lore-wise" fusions are not a perfect combination of two monsters, but instead a strange blending where some of the "aspects" that made the monster strong are lost. The example they gave was Blue Eyes Ultimate dragon being 4500 atk even though mixing three BEs SHOULD give it a much higher atk (ex 9000) but energy/power is lost in the process; kinda gives a weird explanation as why Fusionist would be the way it is

You used to only be able to Special Summon from the Fusion deck by having very specific cards. Now, you can Ritual Summon using a generic ritual spell into a Level 1 ritual monster that is also tuner with an effect that allows you to fusion summon a monster by banishing generic materials from your field or grave, and one of those fusion monsters you can possibly summons allows you to set up either a Synchro OR Xyz summon.
This isn't even an exaggeration. Cynet Ritual, Cyberse Sage, and Cyberse Deavewurm are the three cards mentioned here.

Yep, also the attack and defense ratio sometimes deterred and annoyed a lot of people. Hell, majority of them didn't really give an honest reason to summon them (no effects).
What was surprising is how gate guardian wasn't a fusion monster when you needed all 3 to summon it.
And that attack power was whack.

It's interesting they bothered to introduce the mechanic so early. In the manga/anime, there were barely any Fusions.
That's why a bunch of cards aren't Fusions in the anime, but are Fusions in the actual game. Desperate to push the mechanic, cards were converted from being Normal Monsters into Fusions when adapted to the real life card game.
That's also why they rarely resembled their Fusion Materials, with the exceptions usually being the Fusions that were actually Fusions in the Manga/Anime.

In my opinion, the "Fusion Deck" should have included the Ritual monsters and the (shall we say) "special" monsters like "Metal Zoa" and "Dark Sage" from the very beginning. Sure, this may not have helped when it came to the Fusion mechanic due to the Fusion monsters not making any sense sometimes, but it could have helped lead to the more modern Fusion materials (such as 2 Dark monsters) sooner.

What I also thought was weird and never found out the reason for this is the text box for Flower Wolf from LOB, all other fusion monsters just list the names of all the materials, with a + sign in between but for some reason Flower Wolfâs text box says âFusion:â right before the 2 materials needed

I guess the idea early YGO designers had was that Fusionist was basically a special summon, which was a lot more restricted. Alongside tribute summoning, there was a lot of overestimation on people's willingness to dump multiple cards into a Dark Hole. You could land a turn 1 Summoned Skull if you have the right cards and are willing to 4-for-1 yourself.
