Why are dragster tyres so soft? Why do they crinkle so much?

Top Fuel’ Dragsters have the same power as twelve F1 cars, drink as much fuel as a 747 at take-off and their drivers experience the same G-Force as astronauts did on the Space Shuttle.

All that power means the tyres have to be pretty special to get the car from zero to almost 320mph in under 4 seconds.

But, how do these specialised tyres help the dragsters pull 4 and a half G under acceleration? Why do they wrinkle like this and how do Dragsters reach such incredible speeds? All of that coming up.

The coolest thing about dragsters is they have to rebuild the engine after every race. 6 second engine life.

This is insane, but what I find most amazing is that the tires have been engineered so well that both behave in the same way. You could easily have a situation where one tire folds while the other one doesn’t and that would cause pretty big problems

You should have mentioned that there is so much torque that the clutch welds itself to the flywheel.

I’ve known about top fuel racing for decades but never thought about how the rear tire wrinkling up and ballooning affected the gear ratio. Pretty cool

The tires are actually the only thing that changes the gear ratio. Since theyre a direct drive. The clutch slips for about half the run, until it gets hot enough where it welds itself into a solid piece. Then its just the tires expanding, and they expand quite a bit.

For reference a single dragster (top fuel) cylinder. They use so much fuel that a gallons worth fills the cylinder... Almost hydrolocks it, then is ignited with a spark that couod weld steel.... each cylinder using a gallon or more of fuel per second. Usually need rebuilt between runs to...
