For decades, a delicate balance has existed between Hong Kong’s surfing community and local authorities. But recently, a growing number of “no surfing” signs and police patrols at beaches have raised concerns among surfers. The government has made it clear that surfing is not allowed in all of Hong Kong’s designated swimming beaches, with an aim at protecting swimmers. Big Wave Bay Beach on Hong Kong Island is one of the few locations in the city that is known for its surf breaks. Many surfers there feel that their cherished sport is being unjustly targeted. The Post spoke with some surfers to explore whether a collaborative approach between them and officials can foster a safe and vibrant beach culture.

In New Zealand we have rules on surfing. We have flags to swim between for lifeguards to look after us swimming. Surfing I think is allowed if 5-10 meters either side? Maybe the beaches are different there? Pretty difficult if you like surfing though 😞

The whole world also regards it as a sports competition. If the Hong Kong government is really worried about our personal safety, it can set up some licensing examination systems.
