To clarify the Mustard gas analogy, the Germans were the first to use mustard gas in WW1 at a time when the wind came from the east, which was a massive success. But in general, the predominant wind direction in western Europe is west wind. And as they started using mustard gas, so could the alliance now, as there was no shortage of mustard gas but it was a rule not to use it for its devastating effect. So in the long term, the Germans heavily suffered from ever initiating mustard gas. It's not that they litterally got gassed by their own product.
