This is Hildy’s first place work session and as you can see she is a very smart girl!

In the beginning you can see she was hesitant and unsure of what I was asking.

So rather than using leash pressure, I opted to use something that she finds VERY motivating…beef jerky!
I used her nose to lure her forward and once he got on place i gave her the treat.

So now she has an instantly positive association with the place bed.

Everything from there is about repetition and consistency.

Here are 5 tips for foundational place work…

Use a leash to guide them to the cot, say “place” right before they step on the cot to mark the action.
If your dog is food motivated, use treats, however you will want to eventually phase them out.
If food or touch affection excites them, try using leash pressure to get them on and CALM, soft praise or massaging chest rubs
Say “let’s go” and lead them off with the leash. This will teach them that they need to listen for your cue to be released.
Many repetitions for 10-15 minute sessions (shorter for young puppies) once or twice a day

BONUS TIP! - Start indoors! There are less distractions. Gradually work your way outside. Slowly increase duration. With time and consistency your dog will be able to practice “place” anywhere!
