Of the more than 70 firemen who turned down the job stated that one of the coal rooms was already smoldering and they couldn't even hire enough required firemen. The design of the ship was to use steel rivets but cheaper softer iron rivets were used instead. After multiple iceberg warnings from the California full steam ahead was the order. A few of the surviving crew and passengers who actually saw the iceberg stated that although pretty massive it only stood proud from the water about five or six feet. White Star line, international Mercantile Marine company should have paid big-time

People have been making the ship's speed through a reported icefield a major issue for MANY years now, it was standard operating procedure for every captain on the Atlantic to maneuver their ship at full speed to escape the danger as quickly as possible. It wasn't Captain Smith being reckless, or James Bruce Ismay putting pressure on the captain to arrive in New York on Tuesday rather than Wednesday, it was simply standard operating procedure back then. Everyone figured that it would be easy to see icebergs and move out of the way in time and if the Titanic were to strike an iceberg it didn't matter because she was unsinkable. It sounds crazy nowadays, but that's how it was in that time. What actually doomed Titanic were a number of things, but primarily it was because William McMaster Murdoch (the officer on the bridge during the hit) tried to swerve the Titanic which couldn't turn quickly in any direction, around the iceberg, and when she hit the iceberg it sheared the heads off of the rivets that held her 1" steel plates together and opened the seems between them allowing water to rush in. Had the Titanic simply plowed directly into the iceberg the Titanic's forward collision bulkhead would've taken the impact and the ship would've never sank. Turning your broadside to danger is the absolute worst thing a ship's master could possibly do, and that's exactly what happened to the Titanic that night.
