Verdi’s keen understanding of the perversity of human nature helps make this opera so memorable, despite the plot’s complete lack of moral redemption. I actually think this is one of the most realistic scenes. This is followed at the beginning of Act III by the most famous aria from the opera, ‘La Donna è mobile,’ in which the villainous Duke declaims on his own cynical theory of human nature without being proven wrong. Perhaps this is why Stravinsky wrote ‘I say that in the aria ‘La donna è mobile’, for example, which the elite thinks only brilliant and superficial, there is more substance and feeling than in the whole of Wagner’s ‘Ring’ cycle.’

The music alone could almost carry the opera, even if one were to understand none of the lyrics. I was fortunate to be able to play this twice this year, and haven’t gotten bored of it yet!
