Claude Debussy was born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Debussy began piano lessons there at the age of seven. In 1872 Debussy entered the Paris Conservatoire. As the winner of the 1884 Prix de Rome, Debussy studied in Rome (1885--1887). Then he pernamently returned to Paris. Debussy was impressed by Wagnerian opera and Javanese gamelan music. He was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1903. Debussy's private life was full of scandals and love affairs. In 1904, Debussy was introduced to Emma Bardac, an accomplished singer. They married and had his only child, daughter Claude-Emma. Debussy died of rectal cancer in 1918. From the start, though clearly talented, Debussy was argumentative and experimental. Debussy was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and his use of non-traditional scales and chromaticism influenced many composers who followed. Debussy's music is noted for its sensory component and frequent eschewing of tonality. Some of his most significant pieces: Clair de Lune, Prélude à l'après-midi d'un Faune, La Mer, Noctumes, Images, opera Pelléas et Mélisande. ------------------------ The text above is taken from Wikipedia, under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.
