Albéniz was born in Camprodon, provice of Girona. Albéniz was a child prodigy who first performed at the age of four. In 1883, he met the teacher and composer Felip Pedrell, who inspired him to write Spanish music. Many of Albéniz's piano compositions were transcribed for guitar, notably by Francisco Tárrega, Miguel Llobet and others. The apex of his concert career is considered to be 1889 to 1892 when he had concert tours throughout Europe. During the 1890s Albéniz lived in London and Paris. Albéniz died on 18 May 1909 in Cambo-les-Bains of a kidney disorder, diagnosed as Bright's disease. Only a few weeks before his death, the government of France awarded him its highest honor, the Grand-Croix de la Légion d'honneur. Albéniz's influence on the future of Spanish music was profound. His activities as conductor, performer and composer significantly raised the profile of Spanish music abroad and encouraged Spanish music and musicians in his own country. Many of his pieces such as Asturias (Leyenda), Granada, Sevilla, Cadiz, Cordoba, Cataluña, and the Tango in D are amongst the most important pieces for classical guitar. Selected Albéniz's works: Chants d'Espagne, Suite Española, Iberia, also operatic works -- Merlin, Henry Clifford, and Pepita Jiménez. ------------------------ The text above is taken from Wikipedia, under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.
