No member of the Thompson Twins had performed their songs live in 27 years. So when they put together the lineup of Tom Bailey, Howard Jones, Midge Ure, Ultra Vox, Katrina Leskanich (aka Katrina and the Waves) and China Crises, I had to go and get the closest thing I could to seeing the Thompson Twins, plus those other great artists. After Joe Leeway left the Twins (feeling like three was a crowd when Tom and Alannah Currie married and had a baby), the Twins dutifully carried on with two more albums. And even though I liked those albums, their moment had gone as New Wave became passe. Tom and Alannah moved to New Zealand and replaced the Thompson Twins with Babble, releasing a couple of little-noticed albums (with a few decent songs). Then Tom and Alannah broke up, with Tom moving back to London (with Joe meanwhile in LA). 27 years is a super long hiatus and I was so glad to hear some of my favorite Thompson Twin tracks. Tom had a new backing band who played the songs well. Tom's vocal delivery wasn't awesome, but it was pretty good, and sounded better live than it does on the recording. He was really kind and fun in his interactions with the crowd as well, as were the other artists. My wife likes Howard Jones and it was really good to see him too. Since I'm just posting these videos off my phone nine years later, I was sad to learn I didn't have more and longer videos, and only had one video of Howard Jones without any of the other artists. Hey, but at least I still had some video! I remember that the live version of "You Take Me Up" was really cool, as was "In the Name of Love" and "Hold Me Now." Howard Jones' "Like to Get to Know You Well," "What is Love?" and of course "New Song" were really great too. HoJo played different instruments including his iconic big keyboard guitar. Midge Ure and Katrina were really fun too!
