Music in Leeds

5 videos • 222 views • by leedsmuseums Five short films that look at highlights from the Leeds music scene in 2013. The aim was to capture a snap-shot of bands playing at some of the music venues across the city. These films by no means encapsulate the huge range the ‘Leeds scene’ has to offer but they do act as a starting point for us to curate further films about music in the city. The idea for these films came about as a splinter project to the ongoing work on our Leeds Festival Archive, begun in 2009 and the Leeds Festival 2012 film, which is already on our YouTube channel. The majority of the filming took place in 2013 at Leeds Arena, The Brudenell Social Club, Leeds O2 Academy, The Cockpit and Eiger Studios. Over the five days of filming we interviewed an array of bands including: Simon Rix and Nick ‘Peanut’ Baines from the Kaiser Chiefs, Pulled Apart By Horses, Dear Atria, Ellen Smith and James Warrender from Ellen & The Escapades, Rob Rhodes from Red Chevrons, Andy Doonan & Sam Smith from Andy Doonan, King’s Parade and Rick Witter from Shed Seven. Things can change quickly in music as the legendary Cockpit venue is now closed and sadly Ellen & The Escapades have gone their separate ways. This only reinforces the importance of this work and the value in us building and expanding our contemporary music collections.
