Steamrail Victoria's 'K Class Spectacular'

6 videos • 556 views • by MattOaten VR On the 3rd weekend of August, Steamrail Victoria in conjunction with the Victorian Goldfields Railway ran a weekend long steam event featuring Pheonics locomotives K153, K190 as well as Vulcan oil burner J549 and diesel locomotive T356. Departing out of Melbourne Friday evening, K153 and T356 hauled the train through to Castlemaine where K190 replaced T356. A Saturday morning sunrise departure from Castlemaine saw the two K Classes take the special trhough to Maldon. Once at Maldon, the train was divided and trains with freight and passenger trains, Tender to Tender, Tender First running, double headers and loads of Photo stops were held. Sunday morning saw an early departure for Muckleford with K153 and K190 before continuing on back to Castlemaine. J549 also featured on Sunday hauling the regular service. K153 and K190 combined with T356 to return to Melbourne at lunchtime on Sunday. ~~~ The Victorian Goldfields Railway is a 5 ft 3 inch broad gauge tourist railway in Victoria, Australia. It operates along a formerly disused branch line between the towns of Maldon and Castlemaine. The railway operates over 17km (10.6 miles) starting from the Goldfield town of Maldon, passing through classic Victorian country scenery, towards Castlemaine. The railway is most notable for its first class service where you can ride in heritage air conditioned Pullman car 'Macedon' or on joint stock V&SA sleeping car 'Tambo' featuring an end platform.
