3 videos • 73 views • by Shipwreck Central TV This is the story of a shipwrecked sailor and about the community that saved him. It is a story of bravery and courage, of love and humanity and salvation. Lanier Phillips served on the US Navy destroyer USS Truxton. In the early morning hours of February 18, 1942, during a massive winter storm, the Truxton was sailing from Halifax, NS to the US Naval Base at Argentia, Newfoundland in an area of the North Atlantic known as "torpedo junction". The Truxton was sailing under radio silence and navigating by "dead reckoning" when the vessel ran aground on the cliffs of the Burin Peninsula near the small town of Saint Lawrence, Newfoundland. There were 156 sailors, officers, and mess mates aboard, and Lanier became one of only 46 survivors. This is the story of his rescue.
