Sal Maida - Tom Semioli's KNOW YOUR BASS PLAYER
12 videos • 263 views • by Tom Semioli's KNOW YOUR BASS PLAYER Sal Maida was among the stellar bassists employed by one of the most influential collectives in the history of rock ‘n’ roll: Roxy Music. But that’s just one small chapter in his remarkable career as you will see and hear in this series of interviews. Maida, who migrated to London from Little Itlay at the onset of the glam rock movement to pursue his craft, shines on two stunning tracks which outstrip their respective studio versions – “Pyjamarama” and “Chance Meeting” – included on the iconic ensemble’s only live collection released during their 1970s reign as vanguards and innovators, aptly entitled “Viva.” An exemplary pocket / melodic player with a penchang for plying inventive upper register countermelodies which harmonically and rhythmically enhance any song he plays on - Maida, who is also a writer/producer, worked his signature bass artistry with the Sparks (Big Beat / 1976) – considered by many, including Cheap Trick’s Tom Petersson to be among the greatest rock bass slabs! An in-demand touring bassist and the primo ‘go-to’ player on the New York rock scene - you can also hear Sal on record with David Lowery, Ed Rogers, Cracker, his wife Lisa Burns, and George Usher, among others to cite a very select few, and just about any venue which hosts live rock and roll in New York City.
