Socialism in Pakistan - Farooq Tariq
12 videos • 374 views • by P&JFilms Pakistan has faced many problems for a long time including poverty, droughts, floods, not only caused by natural disasters but also created by human greed and corruption. Even the recent floods have been in part caused by humans as overproduction to boost capitalist profits in the world has increased global warming producing freak weather conditions. The monsoon came late causing drought, then when it did come, it hit with a vengeance. The government has not handled the flood crisis well and has drawn much criticism from within the country. The army has transported people and provisions during the floods but did you know that the Pakistani government gives 30% of its economy to the military and lets them take land and practice secondary trades to further boost their incomes, and another 30% of the economy goes to the world banks. Electricity costs are sky-high in return for a service that often means people are without electricity for 10 to 16 hours. Farooq Tariq the general secretary of Labour Party Pakistan (LPP) explains the situation in various talks and interviews and what the party does to help empower the people, both in terms of surviving the recent floods and in standing up against corrupt bosses and government agents like the police and the military who operate a feudal system. The women activists have been to the forefront of campaigning for their rights. Labour Party activists and trade unionists have been persecuted by the present and last governments and have been jailed or murdered. Farooq Tariq has himself been jailed many times and risks being murdered or executed. He was invited to Scotland in June 2010 to speak to a Scottish Socialist Party meeting where he explained much about the situation and the LPP's activism.
