L'Office National du Film du Canada Présente : "Mr. Leonard Cohen" [see playlist info!] [5 videos]

5 videos • 1,639 views • by Frank Lyalone This playlist previously held a single documentary by the NFBC entitled "Ladies and Gentlemen Mr. Leonard Cohen". Well, happily, I just found out that that same title also entitled a DVD *also* produced by the NFBC and consisting of the aforementioned documentary as well as four short films, in typical "NFBC style", about Mr. Cohen. And some of them are set to his "new" music. BTW. The documentary (also included here) and other works can be found on the NFBC's website and on their YouTube channel. I haven't checked it out yet, but I think you can be pretty sure that "Ladies and Gentlemen …etc" is the only footage of Mr. Cohen to be found prior to about 1988. Clips from it (and *only* it) appear in every single Cohen documentary I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot of them - well, "skimmed" anyway). A little history: Before Mr. Cohen was a famous celebrity he was, in fact, quite infamous, but *celebrated*. That is, at least by his peers, and of course exactly 100% of females who'd managed to remain conscious long enough to remember that they'd actually met him. As for the ones that passed out, it was all just a nightmare about some mystical person *the resisting of whom was an impossibility*. One theory, in fact, has Mr. Cohen being responsible for the baby boomer period where desperate women in frustration, pain and anguish, against all odds, actually turned to their husbands *in bed*! "just get it out of my system". So they'd say in those "doomed decades" … Here is an example of some of his writing at the time (from his book The Spice-Box of Earth: ISBN 10: 0224006495 / 0-224-00649-5, ISBN 13: 9780224006491, Publisher: Random House, Publication Date: 1987, Binding: Paperback): As The Mist Leaves No Scar: ====================== As the mist leaves no scar On the dark green hill, So my body leaves no scar On you, nor ever will. When wind and hawk encounter What remains to keep? So you and I encounter Then turn, then fall to sleep. As many nights endure Without a moon or star, So will we endure When one is gone and far. ====================== This poem became the song: "True Love Leaves No Traces" (with permission from Random House). --------- Thus bring us the Leonard Cohen you know; the man, his poems hidden behind catchy tunes.
