Its sister station Saluran 5 Television Singapura was launched on 2 Apr 1963 with a mix of Singapore English and Malay language programmes. Following Singapore's separation from Malaysia in 1965, Channel 8 became part of Television Singapore, and later it was integrated as part of "Radio and Television Singapore" or "RTS". This led to many expansions including a move to the new S$3.6 million Television Centre in Caldecott Hill on 27 Aug 1966. Channel 8 began colour television broadcasts on 1 May 1974 and the first live colour telecast of the 1974 FIFA World Cup Final between the former West Germany and Netherlands via satellite was shown on 7 Jul 1974. Channel 8 was the first live colour television channel (along with Channel 5) to broadcast the National Day Parade in colour on 9 Aug 1974. Channel 8 started its full-time colour broadcasts (along with Channel 5) on 1 Nov 1977. Two years later, the government policies regarding use of Chinese led to the use of standard Mandarin in all its programming. On 1 Feb 1980, Channel 8 became part of the new "Singapore Broadcasting Corporation" ("SBC") (Chinese: 新广第八波道), which replaced RTS. Although its sister channel, Channel 5, became a full-fledged English channel on 1 Jan 1994, Channel 8 continued broadcasting in Mandarin and Tamil until the channel commenced 24-hour broadcast in 1995. Channel 8 was the first local channel to begin 24-hour non-stop broadcasts on 1 Sep 1995 with Channel 5 commencing on 29 Sep 1995. At the same time, Tamil programmes were transferred to the newly renamed Prime 12 (currently known as "Suria" Channel). Channel 8 was privatized on 12 Feb 2001 as TCS, which along with STV12, became known as MediaCorp TV (Chinese: 新传媒电视第八波道). __________________________________________________
