He had a painful run with cancer. I had 32 years of music and friendship with David - he was like a father to me in many ways. I flew back to America in Jan of 2023 (from Bali), following a strong intuition that I needed to see him. When I landed in Denver The Captain, as he was known, was in the hospital pushing to be released so he could get to his gig! They let him out the next day and I drove with him up to the Golden Moon Speakeasy for what would end up being my last gig with him. I was also able to interview the Capper in his home (I spent some time taking him to doctor's visits and getting him to nibble on ham and cheese croissant sandwiches and we listened in awe to Jimmy Witherspoon on vinyl Evenin' Blues down in the basement like old days).Some of his interview will be released here and some of it will appear in my upcoming feature length documentary We Are Here: Women In Jazz.
