Mellow

Jobs turn into career searches, cellphone bills become mortgages (plus cellphone bills!), and relationships morph into engagements that morph into twenty year marriages. In this fast paced, get it done yesterday age, we currently live in, there needs to be a break. Some "you time," where one must completely veg out and turn off one's brain. Music has been a de-stressor for quite some time. Through my songs, I attempted to choose which melodies and lyrics would not seem too overpowering, yet still hint at that comfort we all look for in life. Mellow is the shoulder one can lean one's head against and sigh heavily. Quite frankly, the first song on Mellow, Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl is on this mix because of the name. To me, it screams teen angst and the double standard or hypocrisy teenagers face because of their age. Such lyrics that suggest this: "Used to be one of the rotten ones and he liked you for that / Now you're all gone got your make-up on and you're not coming back." With Charlie becoming a teenager, it will be long before he experiences such distress. One can go as far to say he has endured agony liking Sam the way he does, and not receiving the same feelings. Rain by Breaking Benjamin could not get any more perfect for a calm CD mix. Although Burnley's voice can be described as "powerful" in songs such as So Cold, Rain breaks through that rocker mold. Don't get me wrong, this song, as soft as it is, has many stronger points that keep the listener listening. Even though Breaking Benjamin's chorus is just a different take on a children's song, such lyrics can be applied to many situations in the "grown-up" world. For example, the chorus: "Rain, rain go away / Come again another day / All the world is waiting for the sun." Looking at the aforementioned problems we encounter daily, one can believe Burnley's Rain is another person's burden. Yet, "Burden, Burden go away" does not have the same ring. The "Bonus Song" being The Flaming Lips The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song is a "tickler." After finding one's center, a number of people (myself included) just want to bask in the feeling, possibly in a silly manner. The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song could not fit such a feeling better. The music and beat alone are able to make a person smile; the juxtaposition Drozd's soft voice creates with this music is what really catches my personal interest. Mellow 1.
