Cellist and teacher of music; born in Ekaterinoslav, Russia; studied violin from his father from age 6; was first cellist at Imperial Opera Orchestra, Moscow, at 17; first cellist with Berlin Philharmonic 1923–28 and taught at Scherwenka Conservatory; toured as a soloist, coming to U.S. 1929 and continued touring for about 20 years; taught at University of Southern California; cofounded Heifetz-Piatigorsky Concerts in Los Angeles 1961; master of 19th-century Romantic tradition.
