St. Thomas More was martyred because he would not renounce his Catholic faith as demanded by the English King Henry VIII. Henry VIII separated from the Catholic Church because the pope would not grant him an annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. Henry VIII named himself head of the Church in England, marking the founding of the Anglican/Episcopal Church. Henry VIII then divorced Catherine and married his lover, Anne Bolyen.
