Tobey's Follow Up Training Session 10-03-20
9 videos • 252 views • by Koco Garcia | Rescue Dog Training Notes for Tobey: -Start small, little to no distractions; right now the goal is to get him to follow you -Left turns, right turns, turn sharp and small "bump" on the leash. Remember you want to "bump" not "pull" -Anytime you stop, he sits -Relaxed arm, let your arm hang at your side, use your wrist to create the "flick" motion, do not use the entire arm! -You want to give him feedback BEFORE he escalates -When he fixates on someone or something: fixation looks like= ears up, wrinkles in forehead, closed mouth, eyes locked on target... THIS IS THE MOMENT YOU CORRECT! Simply give a FIRM "NO", bump the leash, move your feet and walk him away from person or object- The second he relaxes and looks away, PRAISE, PRAISE, PRAISE! Remember your timing and feedback will be the deal breaker for Tobey. If your bumps are slow, and long pulls from your arm, with a soft "no", he won't understand that what he's doing is unwanted- it will just become a nag. Make your "bump" quick, and fast. A firm "no", change your tone, so that it sounds different from your praise. Confidence building exercises are going to be INCREDIBLY important for him. We didn't get to those today, but I've included those videos on this playlist. Confidence building exercises are fun for your dog, the entire process should be full of praise! These will be important for when you have guests over. He needs options, and jobs to do, so he can start making better decisions. An example would be, teaching him the "place command", when a guest comes over, he goes to his Place, everything else becomes Hot Lava. The Place command is one of the best commands to build confidence and teach impulse control. Tobey is a doll!!! He is very lucky to have owners that are so dedicated to helping him be his best self!
