Star Trek TOS - visual effects comparison - season 3

During the last 5 decades it became of one of the biggest franchises in the history of planet Earth. The special effects were groundbreaking for the 1960's, all space shots were done by studio miniatures and all the phaser effects etc. were actually HAND-PAINTED! It's hard to imagine these days how impressive it was for a 60's audience, but for the audience of the 21st century, the effects look rather primitive. In the early 21st century the decision was made to upgrade the show for the modern audience. The show was newly transferred to HD from original 35mm film negatives and it was all beautifully cleaned up and colour-corrected. But they decided to do a very controversial thing - they (CBS) decided to replace ALL the special effects with modern CGI. This new so called "digitally enhanced" edition is the ONLY version which is now shown on TV all around the world. Thankfully after much demand from the fans in 2009 CBS decided to release all episodes on Bluray, and all episodes include BOTH the original AND the new CGI effects. These videos are just a demonstration how much was actually changed in the episodes. On the left side of each video you will see the special effects from the original version of the episode, on the right side you will see the new version of the episode.
