How to Crochet: Beginner Tutorials

11 videos • 23,207 views • by Knots & Kneedles Beginner crochet videos or tutorials need not be complicated or feel overwhelming. I was a beginner crocheter once, too! I'm happy to show you some basic crochet stitches, quick tips, and explain in a simple way that you can easily understand. Afterall, crochet should be fun! My mom taught me to crochet as a teenager, but I dropped it for a long time, and didn't pick up my crocheting again until I was in my 30's. This, of course, made it more difficult, as I had forgotten all the basic crochet stitches I learned...most of them anyway. Once I started crocheting again, and teaching myself how to crochet all over again, I found great enjoyment in it. But, it didn't come without frustrations. There are several common mistakes made by those learning to crochet. Making mistakes is part of a learning process, but if you feel yourself getting too frustrated, my best advice to you is to just walk away from your crochet and return later with a fresh outlook. Take it in smaller doses...maybe crochet only 15-20 minutes at a time until you start to feel more comfortable with your crochet hook. Crocheting can feel difficult to learn, and that's why I find it important to start with the most basic of stitches, practice to a certain comfort level with the stitch, then move on to the next stitch. No jumping ahead, because that will only cause confusion, and nobody wants that. Many crochet stitches are built on or around another stitch, so it's important to start with the basics and then move on to more moderate and advanced stitches. To start crocheting, you won't need much more than a basic worsted weight yarn to crochet with (light in color), scissors to cut your yarn, a yarn needle for weaving in yarn ends, and a medium-sized crochet hook to crochet with - that's it for now. Other tools may be necessary as you progress, but as a beginner in crochet, you'll only need these four basic things. Learning to crochet can also be very rewarding. Even if you only know some of the basic stitches, like the single or double crochet stitches, you will still be able to make some fun beginner crochet projects. Projects like scarves, throws, ponchos, wrist cuffs, phone pouches, and dish cloths. Learn how to change your yarn color (which is easy) and you can really add some creativity to your crochet projects! Eventually, you'll find crochet to be both a relaxing and therapeutic craft. You'll find yourself crocheting while in front of the television at night. You'll become that good! I know it's hard to imagine now, but trust me...all things are possible. Crochet is immensely satisfying in the simple fact that you are making something out of nothing more than some yarn - crochet starts out as nothing and the only other ingredient is YOU. It's such a rewarding and creative process! I hope that you give yourself the time and patience to learn crochet. I promise to help you as much as I can. Feel free to ask me questions in the comment section of my crochet tutorials. I'll get back to you almost immediately. If I don't know the answer, I'll send you to someone who does. Your success is important, to both of us! Are you ready to crochet?
