PhD Admission at Homi Bhabha National Institute Mumbai
Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), a deemed to be University, 2nd Floor, Training School, Anushaktinagar, Mumbai- 400094; established to meet the human resource requirements in the multidisciplinary areas of Nuclear science, Engineering and Technology, has invited applications for Junior Research Fellow positions in Physical Sciences and Engineering Sciences. There are 2 Junior Research Fellow (JRF) positions for working for Ph.D Program under the supervision of faculty at HBNI central office, Mumbai.
The Research fellows will have access to the research infrastructure facilities available in all Constituent Institutions (CI) and Off-Campus Centre (OCC) of HBNI with due permissions.
Research Areas for Ph.D. program: (a) Physical Sciences: Theoretical High Energy Nuclear Physics exploring QGP and QCD (b) Engineering Sciences: Computational fluid dynamics, thermal hydraulics and safety, energy systems, multi-phase flow.
Eligibility for Ph.D. admissions: (i) Physical Sciences: Masters/ Integrated Masters in Physics with 60% or equivalent CGPA or 4 years BS program in Physics with 75% or equivalent CGPA (ii) Engineering Sciences: ME/ MTech in Mechanical/ Chemical/ Nuclear Engineering with 60% or equivalent CGPA.
Applicants should have qualified at least one of the National Level Examinations among CSIR-UGC-NET (JRF), GATE, JEST, AICTE and similar examinations conducted by the Govt. of India institutions. The GATE score card should be valid as on 31st March 2024. It is expected that, candidates are proficient in English writing and communication.
Fellowship: The fellowship given by HBNI will be as per DAE guidelines. Ph.D. students will be eligible to get fellowship of Rs. 37,000/- per month for first 2 years. The fellowship will be enhanced to Rs. 42,000/- per month for remaining 3 years, subject to the condition that he/she fulfils all the requirements of the Institute that will be stipulated from time to time. All JRF/SRF will be eligible for annual contingency including book allowance of Rs. 40,000/- per year. DAE guidelines are to be followed for the utilization of the grant. In addition to the fellowship, HRA is permissible at the rates of the fellowship guidelines of DAE. HRA is not admissible if HBNI provides accommodation.
Selection Procedure: Selection committee will short-list the candidates from amongst those who meet the minimum educational qualifications and satisfy additional criteria which may be set as deemed necessary. Short-listed candidates will be scheduled for an interview for admission. Based on the performance of the candidates in the selection process, the selection committee will recommend candidates for admission to the Ph.D. program.

Test/interview will be in the 2nd week of April 2024 (tentative dates). Interviews may be held in online or physical mode, as will be decided by HBNI.
