Before my last flight out of Santorini, I heard a lot of Americans grumbling about overweight baggage fees. I felt their pain, because I got burned on this the last time I was in Europe too (and it applies in Australia as well). It gets really expensive really fast. I think I once paid 85 Euro for an extra bag in the Rome airport. And I had to get out of line, go upstairs to pay at a separate counter, and then come back to the original one to finish the process.
23kg means 23kg…they will not overlook a 29kg bag. They may also weigh your “cabin baggage.” And if it’s over 8kg, the same thing applies.
I pay careful attention now to the fares I’m purchasing to ensure they include a checked bag, a cabin bag, and a personal item (laptop bag/purse). Even though I don’t really need the personal item, it doesn’t get weighed, so I can move some overflow weight in to it if needed. I essentially just keep my valuables in it since it’ll stay with me on the plane, and I can lock it if needed. I’ll never do two roller-bags in Europe ever again, unless I’m permanently moving somewhere. 🤣 Not worth it!
If you don’t have that option, for some airlines, it’s less expensive to buy bags before you get to the airport instead of at the airport. Americans aren’t used to this, so it’s good to be aware of. And save some weight for souvenirs if you’re in to that sort of thing. That’s where these Americans went wrong. Happy traveling! ✈️
