Once a year, people in Europe celebrate shared European cultural heritage. The Council of Europe launched the initiative in 1985, and in 1999 was joined by the European Union to create a joint action which has continued up to the present day.
Every year from mid-August to early November #EuropeanHeritageDays are putting new cultural assets on view and opening up historical places normally closed to the public. Within each country, a network of regional and local authorities, civic and private groups and thousands of volunteers are in charge of organising events.
Each year comes with a special pan-European theme. Countries can join in the annual shared theme. Alternatively, they can organise events around a local adaptation of the theme or a theme of their choice.
In 2023 tens of thousands of people all across the continent are celebrating "Living Heritage".
