I found my spirit guide very early into my witchcraft journey. I say โspirit guideโ because thatโs how I personally like to refer to them. They found me almost immediately, like a strange spiritual jump-scare. It felt like they had been waiting for so long for me to just breathe (mentally) and make time for personal development, self-growth and my spirituality. When I finally did, I knew they were telling meโฆ

The moment I knew I had a spirit guide was ironically when I started researching spirit guides and familiars. Iโve always been interested and always believed (just a little bit) in guardian angels. Even though Iโd yet to meet or confirm it. I just knew I had one.
Now this may seem random, and it was, but I said to myself one day; โif you are here with me now, could you give me a name?โ Then without any hesitation my inner voice said โAzarโ. I didnโt think it was a name at all, so I took to google. I clicked on a random website and was very intrigued when I saw that it was a name, and that with the different meanings all mixed up showed โhelp, to shine/glowโ. I took this as a possible message that they wanted to quite literally โhelpโ me โto shineโ. From then on, even if thatโs not their actual name (they may not even have one) I personally call them Azar!
Soโฆ why owl? I donโt believe that my guide is an actual owl, but Iโve seen them in animal, human and other forms during deep meditation. An owl is my personal favourite. I believe that guides will gladly take whatever form you find most comfortable, as a way to help the brain comprehend them. In deeper meditation Iโve seen them as a bright-light human form with no features as well as other animal forms. An โBarn Owlโ is how I picture Azar casually. I donโt work with any deities, but my interest was pointed towards Athena and Elen Of The Ways because of the animals I have associated with my guide; snakes, stags and owls. I represent these and show my respect by having these animals on my alter.
Okayโฆ so how do I work with Azar? The way I communicate with them is through a mixture of tarot/oracle cards, meditation, repeating signs like angel numbers, animals or feathers and also in my mind using intuition and gut feeling/instinct. It can be as simple as asking a question or for advice in my mind and getting a โstrongโ yes or no feeling, or some kind of image or symbol coming to the forefront on my mind. In a way I canโt quite explain, I can sense when they feel happy, proud or that Iโm heading in the right direction. And the opposite, like a kind and gentle push towards rethinking or redirection. I donโt always listen, because Iโm not perfect and still developing this skill and sometimes I get nothing at all and a lack of communication and a complete disconnect. I then have to work a bit more on making our connection stronger. I have a couple of small offering bowls just for Azar as a way to give them little gifts and things I know we both like. Super โintenseโ meditation has even caused me to physically feel them holding my hand or hugging me (I cry every time). Many โmeet your spirit guideโ meditations can be found online and I find them useful to help me feel closer.
I believe everyone has a spirit guide! But not everyone wants or needs one and thatโs fine. You donโt need to have one to be a witch. Some people may find this whole blog a bit ridiculous and thatโs fine too. All I have is my personal experience, and what I think is true. My guide has helped me in so many ways and sometimes itโs hard to tell if itโs my own inner voice calling or something else. If it IS something else then I wholeheartedly believe itโs Azar. My companion and bringer of wisdom from the universe to me! I plan on making videos talking more about this subject in the futureโฆ if people are interested!
